Hey guys. I've been trying to get started on an ORPG for like 2 months now.
After much struggling, trying to figure out what I should start with, Valkier suggested I should just work out a storyline first. So here it is.
But first, a bit more information about the map.
Aliens ORPG
I intend to have the classes, combat style, and gameplay style loosely based on the Undead Assault / NOTD / SWAT maps. There will be an ammunitions system, but NOT based on those maps. There will be no reloading (I want to keep combat somewhat basic and clean. Reloading during a boss fight might make it a bit chaotic and stressful) however you will have to purchase / find ammunition.
All classes will start as a basic Recruit. At a certain level / rank they can specialize. (This is sort of based on Twilight's Eve). After specializing, when they reach a certain level / rank they can specialize further.
I have the classes and whatnot planned out in my head. Wouldnt take much work to put it on paper.
Also, this ORPG is probably going to go on SC2. I'm more comfortable with the editor, it gives me more to work with, and an ORPG of this nature would definately be at home with SC2 more than WC3.
In the year 2042, the United States discovered that it sat upon the single largest hidden oil field in the world. Oil companies began digging, and for a time, people prospered. Over the next few years, great technological and medical advancements were made, increasing the average human life span by nearly 40 years.
By 2287, oil companies reported that the oil field they had found was nearly depleted. More over, they had found fossils at the bottom of the oil pit.
By 2288, researchers discovered that the fossils contained almost-human DNA, and were nearly 16 million years old.
In 2294, the most significant technological advancement in human history was made - the ability to harvest an infinite amount of energy from Earth's yellow sun.
By 2314, the United States in agreement with the United Nations, has re-legalized human cloning. Due to this, more medical advancements were made, again increasing the average human life by another 20 years.
By 2323, European researchers discovered a way to create life artificially using the DNA from certain fossils.
By 2325, Europe and the United States came to an agreement that would allow Europian researchers to study the fossil and, assuming the results were promising, recreate the fossil's DNA.
By 2340, Europe and the United States agreed that the fossil was safe and contained enough DNA to successfully clone.
By 2342, Europian scientists finished extracting the necessary DNA to begin the cloning operation. They thought the outcome would be human...
They were wrong.
By 2343, a horrible plague originating from the fossil spread across all of Europe. The disease was 100% fatal, and mutated too quickly to discover any cure. Victims who died from the plague would soon rise and begin feasting on the flesh of the living.
By 2344, the estimated death toll in Europe was nearly 650 million.
By 2345, the plague had spread to the United States.
With the whole world in turmoil, the United States sent 2 million US citizens to colonize a new planet.
They named this new planet Salus, a latin word for "Salvation".
Present Day
The year is now 2482.
Many people have forgotten the tragedies that occured on their previous home world.
Portions of the planet have been colonized, a government has been successfully re-established, and the US military is up and running.
Colonel Redfield has been ordered to take his troup of recruits to their final training excercise when something goes seriously wrong.
The plague has followed them to their new planet.
Keep in mind I wrote this in about an hour, so it does need some touch up. Let me know what you guys think. If you like it, I'll start working on an advanced storyline and the classes.
If anybody has any suggestions, feel free to PM me or leave a reply.
Also, I'm probably going to be recruiting people to help me out for the following: Website/Forums Administrators - Will be in charge of editing the website My fists have shattered men's dreams, destroyed families, and crushed hopes. But when I open these hands, I can hold my wife, make my children laugh and even aid others. The path that we take is not right. It is simply the path that we choose.

Basically people live for 150+ years and some fossil found way beneath the ground is from a zombie? Malevolent criminal I, when the vision paints my mind. Cross the invisible line... ...and you'll be paid in kind.
Mmm not really a zombie. It was humanoid, but the DNA contained a deadly virus that got passed around. My fists have shattered men's dreams, destroyed families, and crushed hopes. But when I open these hands, I can hold my wife, make my children laugh and even aid others. The path that we take is not right. It is simply the path that we choose.
Like I mentioned, it's a VERY rough draft. If theres anything you would change to make it sound a bit more realistic / interesting / viable, feel free to offer up any suggestions.
I'm actually starting to work a little bit on the terrain now. Gona do the starting outpost and surrounding area.
After I'm done that, I'm going to do a few of the heroes, work a bit on the EXP/bounty, and a quest or 2.
If I feel good about it, I'll continue. If I dont like it, I'll scrap it and start over. My fists have shattered men's dreams, destroyed families, and crushed hopes. But when I open these hands, I can hold my wife, make my children laugh and even aid others. The path that we take is not right. It is simply the path that we choose.

Not many people out there are a fan of the SC2 rpgs. Thats why I want to make one - so theres a decent one out there.
Its not that SC2 is just a bad base for RPG games, its just that nobody has put enough effort into making a good one.
I've seen a few maps that show a lot of potential, but they're left to be what they are.
Take SC2's NOTD:AM. That map has the perfect base for an ORPG. It just needs some fine-tuning is all. My fists have shattered men's dreams, destroyed families, and crushed hopes. But when I open these hands, I can hold my wife, make my children laugh and even aid others. The path that we take is not right. It is simply the path that we choose.
war3 is much better for rpgs :P Rest in Peace...Josey The DoG Wales... http://www.youtube.com/user/hero12345333 Visit my youtube channel :) http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/GhostWolf223
SC2 does actually have somewhat of a bad base for RPGs. SC is more "futuristic" and Special Forces and stuff....I think more WC3 for an RPG (the whole fantasy bit in wc3 really just adds to it)
SC2 is all about your army, and WC3 was all about your army as well as your heroes. WC3 RPGs just stole the hero from the army and put him in a new situation.....granted with much change usually.

So 300 years after solar power....we rediscovered solar power? Fail! :P Malevolent criminal I, when the vision paints my mind. Cross the invisible line... ...and you'll be paid in kind.

It's nearly 500 years in the future. Aliens/Zombies all over the place. The heroes are marines (of which all kinds are readily available).
Also note: Heroes are easy to make from units. Terraining is MUCH more detailed, lots of possibility for amazing terrain. I'm more familiar with SC2 Editor than WC3 Editor. This RPG IS futuristic. Has nothing to do with a WC3-styled "fantasy" genre.
Cons about doing this on WC3: Less familiar with the editor. Terrain is always lumpy and ugly. I'd have to import nearly 90% of the hero/unit skins. The player base has dropped dramatically. I have to compete with CoT (xP)
Now, if you can somehow find a way to convince me to put it on WC3 instead of SC2, I will, but its not looking good so far =)
Edit: And btw, 300 years after we discover solar power, we discover a way to turn it into a limitless, but more importantly, EFFICIENT, source of power.
As of right now, you need a massive solar panel to power a toaster =) not efficient, lol. My fists have shattered men's dreams, destroyed families, and crushed hopes. You'd compete with CoT anyway for those who have TFT and SC2

Don't think that's the case, but I wonder what would happen if we basically had a giant satellite in space with solar panels which basically charge oversized batteries to power Earth. That or we get some kind of cable running to this satellite....but you get the point.
And I wasn't trying to convince you to go WC3 anyway, I'm just saying MOST RPGs have more of a fantasy feel than futuristic, and MOST futuristic things are more about the technology than people. (That's not to say you can make an ARES a hero, I'm just saying people tend to go more for an ARES or Kerri's "Infested Plague" than a single hero who's going to save the world) Malevolent criminal I, when the vision paints my mind. Cross the invisible line... ...and you'll be paid in kind.
I would like to help you test if you need anyone I love sc2 maps but they all suck and there are no good rpgs... and the popularity system just makes it suck more Have fun making you map!
Not all SC2 maps suck. Income wars, IA2......there are more nice ones too. I did see one good RPG but it seems to have been dropped.
Personally I also think the popularity thing is stupid. If it's not played, the map needs good people to play it a lot to get it up the board. If it loses momentum, it'll drop off. Malevolent criminal I, when the vision paints my mind. Cross the invisible line... ...and you'll be paid in kind.
