The bowl's thinking is not understood unless you read the books....number 3 if I remember correctly has the explanation.

| Improbability drives and such.
It's very amusing...at one point the ship is basically made out of string/yarn, and another time the people turn into sofas.
You never know what might happen.....ESPECIALLY when you try going to where you are without reaching 100% normality. In that case, 2 nuclear missiles were turned into a whale and a bowl of petunias. The whale was "naming" everything while he plummeted to the ground.....which he was about to try to make friends with. The bowl of petunias, however, was pissed at Arthur Dent. It's not explained or even mentioned in the movie.
